Information on Donations
TAX CREDITS
Canadians with taxable income may claim a tax credit for their donations to a registered political party when they file their income tax return. The amount of tax credit (that is, reduction in your taxes payable) depends on the amount of political contributions you make during the taxation year.
The information below shows how the tax credit is calculated:
- Donations up to $400 provide a tax credit of 75% of the amount donated
- Donations from $401 to $750 provide a tax credit of $300 plus 50% of the amount donated over $400
- Donations over $750 provide a tax credit of $475 plus 33.33% of the amount donated over $750, up to a maximum of a $650 tax credit for the year
- The $650 maximum tax credit amount is reached when your donations total $1275 in the taxation year
LIMITS ON CONTRIBUTIONS
Only Canadian citizens or permanent residents may make political contributions, in each of the following amounts:
- No more than $1,750 in any calendar year to each registered political party
- No more than $1,750 in total in any calendar year to the combined entities of each registered political party's Electoral District Associations, Nomination Contestants and Candidate campaigns
- No more than $1,750 in total between all registered Party Leadership contestants in a particular leadership contest, in years when a Leadership contest is held
